St Albans was originally provided with an interlocked frame on the 17th of June 1901. It was 12 levers and most likely a McKenzie and Holland No 6 Pattern Frame. This was replaced by an A Pattern frame in 1914 in the same building with no changes to the interlocking arrangements.
In 1922 a new 20 lever A Pattern Frame was provided, there was no alteration to the existing arrangement bar a pilot lever with an Annett Lock for the up end points into the goods siding.
1926 saw a completely new signal box erected on the up end of the platform. Unlike the others this one featured a set of interlocked gates on Main Street, worked by Gatewheel 26, Gatestop 25, and Wicket Gate levers 23, 24. All 2 position semaphore signals were replaced with 3 position colour-light signalling by August 1930, with the only exception being post 19 which was a 2 position colour-light signal.
The station significantly changed in November 1959; The down platform and associated buildings were abolished with a new island platform provided on up end of Main Street, with the rear platform doubling as a headshunt for the new Stabling Sidings also on the up end. New signal box erected with 36 lever A Pattern Cam and Tappet frame provided.
Set of interlocked gates provided on Main Street, worked by Gatewheel 1, Gatestop 2, and Wicket Gate levers 3, 4, 5, 6.
